One man’s game of Civilization II that’s been going on for ten years

For the past ten years, a Redditor by the name of Lycerius has been playing the same game of Civilization II. the three-civilization war he’s been fighting has been at a stalemate for over one thousand years, with the entire campaign currently at 3991 A.D., with things pretty much at a standstill for quite some time.

Lycerius is fighting a war against the Vikings and the Americans, while he is playing the Celts. Everything about his current campaign is hilarious. Lycerius was trying to play as a democracy, but was forced to switch to communism to survive. The way a democratic nation works in Civ II is that you can’t usually instigate a war while you’re in peacetime, but every single turn the Vikings would automatically attack, thus breaking the treaty. His citizens wouldn’t allow him to start the war before the Vikings inevitably attacked, so the democracy put him at a disadvantage. Funny, that. Even funnier, the Vikings and the Americans, the other two superpowers, are theocracies.

In order to survive the onslaught of Viking and American troops, Lycerius is forced to dump all of his resources into the war effort, rather than city improvements that would maintain some level of citizen happiness, including a store of food. Due to this, the citizens are always unhappy — a sore point for people who played the earlier games in the Civ series.

Whenever his troops make any sort of advance on the front lines, the computer opponents immediately nuke the effort, not only destroying the advancing units, but making the surrounding land inhabitable, rendering any sort of terrain improvement impossible. Late game worker units, Engineers, have an ability to clean up the pollution left from nuclear fallout in order to make the terrain usable once again, but are stuck in a cycle of building roads to help the war units travel to the front lines faster, as his front line units and roads get destroyed every turn by pillaging enemy forces.

The land that hasn’t been destroyed by nuclear war has been turned into swampland, which isn’t farmable, due to the ice caps having melted twenty times, and the Engineers don’t have time to clear the swampland for the same reason they don’t have time to clear the nuclear pollution. Ninety percent of the world’s population has died off due to nuclear war or famine caused by global warming.

The current war has been fought for around 1,700 years. Because of the SDI improvement, ICBMs aren’t usually used on cities, so any type of city attack is carried out through the use of spies infiltrating a city and planting an explosive.

Two groups beat Diablo III in 7 hours, one guy beats it solo in 12. All of them are still working on setting the record for longest time without talking to a girl.

Within just seven hours of Diablo III being released yesterday, several groups had already beaten the game and within 12 hours, one lone bastard beat the game single-handedly. While these sorts of speed runs don’t really allow for a real enjoyment of the content, it is pretty impressive and it’s the kind of crazy that comes with most Blizzard releases.

The single player who beat the game, named Yoshichan, posted his end-game stats, and has a time of twelve hours and twenty-nine minutes. He made it to level 32 as a barbarian, playing on normal difficulty.

Of the two groups that cleared the game in seven hours, one was from South Korea, the other from China.

The Elder Scrolls Online MMO is coming out next year

When Elder Scrolls: Skyrim came out, many began wondering when or if Bethesda would actually come out with an Elder Scrolls MMO. Next year, friend. Today, Bethesda announced that Elder Scrolls Online would be coming out some time in 2013.

Set a millennium before the events of Bethesda’s last The Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls Online will take place across all of Tamriel during a time when daedric prince Molag Bal is wreaking havoc on the realm. The game will feature three player factions and PvP combat. Presumably you’ll be able to travel across the entire world of The Elder Scrolls—Game Informer mentions recurring areas Elsweyr, Skyrim, and Cyrodiil as locations in the MMORPG.

“We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted,” director Matt Firor said in a press release. Firor previously worked on fantasy MMORPG Dark Age of Camelot. “It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

Halo 4 is coming November 6 for the Xbox 360

Microsoft finally announced a set date for Halo 4… November 6 of this year, for the Xbox 360. Obviously.

The worldwide launch date, the same day as the US presidential election, places the game after planned September and October releases for anticipated holiday titles like Borderlands 2, Bioshock Infinite, Assassin’s Creed 3, and Medal of Honor: Warfighter, but still well ahead of the post-Thanksgiving sales period.

The new game, which Microsoft has called the beginning of a “new trilogy” for the franchise, is set four years after the events of Halo 3, which seems appropriate for a game coming out almost exactly four years after the last numbered Halo game.

This will be the first new Halo game not developed by series creator Bungie, which signed a 10-year publishing deal with Activision in 2010, just before the release of Halo: Reach. Bungie had formally split from Microsoft back in 2007 to work on a new, non-Halo franchise. Microsoft’s 343 Industries will be taking over the series’s development for Halo 4, after previously working on Halo: Reach’s downloadable Defiant Map Pack and last year’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary re-release.
