FIFA finally approves the use of goal-line technology

This is the best news in the sporting world that I’ve heard in a long time. Now if the MLB would only follow suit and institute instant replay technology for close calls, the world would be almost perfect.

FIFA has unanimously voted to approve the use of goal-line technology in professional football – announcing it will be used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

FIFA approved both the Hawk-Eye and the GoalRef systems at a meeting in Zurich, meaning technology can be introduced by the Premier League and the FA.

However, its introduction will not be immediate because each system will have to be licensed, installed and tested in each venue to ensure it is functioning properly.

FIFA intends to use the new technology at the Club World Cup later this year, with the Confederations Cup in 2013 and next World Cup also employing the technology following a series of controversies in recent tournaments.

Momentum towards goal-line technology increased ever since Frank Lampard was denied an equaliser for England against Germany in the 2010 World Cup when the ball hit the bar and bounced over the line but no goal was given.

NY Giants defensive end Justin Tuck gets the coolest facemask ever

This facemask looks like what I would imagine a NFL facemask would look like in Game of Thrones.

“The idea is he doesn’t want to get grabbed,” said [Giants equipment director] Joe Skiba, who was honored this offseason with the Whitey Zimmerman Equipment Manager of the Year Award. “But then it becomes one of those situations where when you make a facemask with so many bars like that how much weight is going to be too much weight. So what Schutt did was we made that out of titanium, which is light as a feather. You can feel his helmet now, it feels just as light.”

Tuck, who has suffered from neck injuries during his career, believes the tighter cage on this facemask will prevent opponents from grabbing onto it and jerking his head around.

It is also surprising to learn that NFL players are free to have helmets custom-made for them, given the league’s propensity for draconian uniform regulations. Perhaps Tuck’s mask will inspire other players to inject a little style into their headgear. Maybe Jared Allen could get a facemask on which the bars form an American flag pattern.

Does smoking weed help win football games? For the Oregon Ducks it does.

For the football team of the University of Oregon in Eugene, pot is just part of the culture and it’s something many players credit to the team’s success. Oh yeah, well that’s Oregon, right? There is a hell of a lot of weed in Eugene, but it’s not just Oregon. More often around the country, student athletes are claiming that getting high before a game helps them concentrate on their performance.

The Ducks are savoring their win over Wisconsin, Oregon’s first victory in a Rose Bowl since 1917 and Chip Kelly’s first postseason triumph as head coach. Earlier today, the school buzzed as the team made its victory lap around campus. Now, as one Duck relishes another kind of high, he wants to make something clear. “It’s not just us,” he says, taking another hit. “If you think Oregon’s the only team smoking weed, you’re crazy.”
